Making Vet Visits Easier and Less Stressful
Vet visits can be a little overwhelming for some pets. New smells, unfamiliar people, other animals, and a change in routine can all add to their stress. A little preparation can go a long way in helping your pet feel more comfortable before, during, and after their appointment.
Start by bringing a few things your pet already loves.
High-value treats, a favorite toy, or a familiar blanket can provide comfort and help create positive associations with the visit. For cats and other pets who travel in carriers, leaving the carrier out at home instead of only bringing it out for vet visits can also help make it feel like a familiar, safe space.
On the day of the appointment, give yourself plenty of time so the trip doesn’t feel rushed. Keep your voice and movements calm, and allow your pet time to adjust to their surroundings. If treats are appropriate for their visit, rewarding calm behavior throughout the appointment can help make the experience more positive.
Most importantly, let your veterinary team know if your pet is nervous, fearful, or has struggled during previous visits. Sharing that information ahead of time allows the team to adjust their approach and help make the visit as comfortable as possible. For pets with significant anxiety, your veterinarian may also be able to recommend additional strategies or medications to help future visits go more smoothly.
Every positive experience helps build confidence. With preparation, patience, and a little extra comfort from home, vet visits can become less stressful for both you and your pet.
