Halloween Tips and Tricks (Plus Treats!)
Halloween can be a fun time for both humans and animals, and we have some recommendations to ensure a safe time for all!
Ensure all candy, treats, and chocolate are out of reach from both dogs and cats (cats can get into things too!). If they do get into anything they shouldn’t, always contact Poison Control and note down how much they ate, how long ago, and any symptoms. Ensure you also have an accurate current weight of your animal so they can give you the proper protocol.
If your animals are anxious with doorbells or noises, give them a quiet room, safe crate, or utilize baby gates for them to settle in for the night. This eliminates any risks of sneaking out the door as well if you participate in trick or treating!
Pets can have added stressed during holidays outside of just Halloween and can sometimes benefit from management. If your pet exhibits behaviors such as refusing food, panting and pacing, excessive hiding, or new behaviors of avoidance or reactivity reach out to us to schedule an appointment for how we can help them feel better during their high stress times.
If you are walking your dog, ensure their harness or collar are secure to prevent any escapes as decor or costumes can be alarming for some dogs. You can even take it a step further and have a leash on both collar and harness. Even if your dog is typically not the anxious type, on days when things can be unpredictable it is always better to be safe than sorry!
Want to have your pet join the festivities? Try at home treats with frozen pumpkin puree or plain greek yogurt, both are safe and fun for dogs and cats. Dogs can also enjoy carrots, blueberries, and bananas which with some creativity can be made into fun snacks. Freeze blueberries in ice cubes or freeze some carrots in greek yogurt. Costumes work too!
Finn also dressed up for his first appointment! Happy Halloween!
